Itinerary

Your grand Himalayan road trip commences with a comfortable drive from Chandigarh to Shimla. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and settle in, preparing for the majestic journey ahead into the heart of Himachal Pradesh. Enjoy your first evening in the serene hills of Shimla.

Today, we begin our true ascent into the heart of Himachal. Drive from Shimla to Sangla, where the Baspa River gracefully carves its way through forested slopes, creating exquisite vistas of the Kinnaur Valley. Sangla is known for its rich agriculture, with apple, pear, walnut, apricot, and potato cultivations adorning the landscape. Enjoy your included dinner and overnight stay at a comfortable hotel in Sangla.

After breakfast, we journey towards Chitkul, one of the Kinnaur Valley's most picturesque settlements and the final inhabited village before the India-China border. This scenic drive from Sangla offers countless photographic opportunities along the Baspa riverbanks. After soaking in the views, we proceed to Kalpa. Local lore suggests Kalpa was Lord Shiva's winter abode, and with its enthralling views of the Kinner-Kailash and Jorkandan peaks, it's easy to see why. Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Kalpa.

Today, we navigate the legendary Hindustan-Tibet Highway (NH 22), famously dubbed one of the "most treacherous roads in the world" – a true visual spectacle! Rest assured, our highly skilled and experienced local drivers ensure your safety throughout this Himachal road trip. Observe the dramatic transformation of the mountains from Kinnaur's lush greens to Spiti's myriad brown hues. We make a brief yet essential stop at Nako, a captivating lake village where Hinduism and Buddhism harmoniously coexist, offering a rare and unmissable sight. Following lunch in Nako, we continue our drive to Kaza, the administrative headquarters of Spiti Valley. Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Kaza.

Our fifth day delves into the charming and secluded villages of Pin Valley. Imagine a national park teeming with diverse flora and fauna, including rare plant varieties, a gushing river (when not frozen), and thrilling trekking opportunities. Pin Valley delivers all this and more. We begin with a visit to Kungri Monastery, then journey to the beautiful hamlet of Mudh – the last motorable village in Pin Valley. Established as a national park in 1987, Pin Valley, with altitudes ranging from 11,000 to 20,000 feet, is a sanctuary for at least 12 endangered snow leopards, Siberian ibex, bharal, and various bird species. After exploring Pin Valley, we return to Kaza for dinner and overnight stay.

Today, we ascend to some of the world's highest inhabited regions. Komik, Asia's highest village (4513 meters), meaning 'eye of a snow cock,' is a farming village of isolated souls, cut off for much of the year. Next, we visit Hikkim, home to the world's highest post office – don't forget to send a postcard! After sending a postcard, we drive to Langza (4400 meters), a village of the Sakyapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, where you can explore ancient temples and search for marine fossils from when Spiti was submerged by the Tethys Sea. Later, we visit the world-renowned Ki Monastery, an 11th-century structure and a prominent learning center, offering incredible photographic opportunities. We also explore Kibber, a high-altitude village offering stunning landscapes, and Gette. We return to Kaza for dinner and overnight stay.

On the seventh day of your Spiti Valley tour, we drive to Dhankar, home to an impressive monastery perched dramatically on a cliff. For those interested and fit, we'll embark on an optional trek to the serene Dhankar Lake located above the monastery, offering breathtaking views. Later, we proceed to the charming village of Lhalung, known for its ancient Serkhang Monastery. Experience local hospitality with a homestay accommodation and included meals, offering a deeper insight into authentic Spitian life.

Today's journey takes us to some of Spiti Valley's most iconic locations. We drive from Lhalung to Losar, the last village in Spiti before crossing the mighty Kunzum La pass. At 15,000 feet, Kunzum Pass connects Kullu and Lahaul to Spiti Valley, offering spectacular panoramic views. Finally, we reach Chandratal Lake – a visual marvel. This stunning blue lake, at 4,300 meters, is a must-see, especially on a full moon night. Witness the lake transform from crystal clear blues to emerald greens at dusk. Experience the dream of comfortable Himalayan camping as you spend your evening gazing at the Milky Way and millions of stars. Overnight at a camp near Chandratal Lake. This high-altitude travel experience will be truly memorable.

On the penultimate day of your Spiti Valley expedition, we drive from Chandratal Lake towards Manali. We'll pass through the scenic Chattru region, known for its rugged beauty. Our journey includes a drive through the famous Atal Tunnel, an engineering marvel that significantly reduces travel time and provides a comfortable passage back to Manali. This marks the transition from the arid landscapes of Spiti back to the lush Kullu Valley. Upon arrival, check into your hotel. Enjoy a farewell dinner and an overnight stay in Manali.

After breakfast, we begin our final drive from Manali back to Chandigarh, concluding your unforgettable 10-day Grand Spiti & Kinnaur Expedition with Tripplatter. You'll depart with cherished memories and a profound connection to the majestic Himalayas, having completed an epic Himachal Pradesh road trip.

Faq

The ideal time for our Grand Spiti & Kinnaur Expedition is from May to October. During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, high mountain passes like Kunzum La are open, and the region is at its most accessible for sightseeing and Himalayan adventure. We recommend planning your trip during this period to ensure the best experience.

Yes, Spiti Valley is generally considered very safe for tourists. The local communities are warm, hospitable, and the region experiences a peaceful environment. Tripplatter prioritizes your safety with experienced local drivers, well-planned itineraries, and adherence to all necessary safety protocols. We continuously monitor road conditions and weather updates.

AMS is a common concern in high-altitude travel like Spiti Valley. Our 10-day itinerary is specifically designed to minimize AMS risks by: Gradual Ascent: We follow the Shimla to Spiti route, which offers a more gradual increase in altitude, allowing your body to acclimatize naturally. Hydration: Drink plenty of water (3-4 liters daily). Avoid alcohol, smoking, and excessive caffeine. Rest: Don't overexert yourself, especially during the initial days. Listen to your body. Light Meals: Opt for easily digestible, carbohydrate-rich foods. Communication: Inform your tour leader immediately if you experience symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual fatigue. Our team carries basic first-aid and oxygen backup. Consult Your Doctor: We highly recommend consulting your physician about Diamox (acetazolamide) as a preventive measure, if suitable for you.

You will be staying in comfortable hotels and guesthouses in major towns like Shimla, Sangla, Kalpa, and Kaza. In more remote areas like Lhalung, we provide authentic homestay experiences. At Chandratal Lake, you'll enjoy well-equipped camps with high-altitude sleeping bags/blankets and comfortable mattresses for an unforgettable experience under the starry nights. Please note that in case of limited camping options at Chandratal, the overnight stay might be in Losar, with a visit to the lake the next day.

Layering is crucial due to varying temperatures. We recommend: Clothing: Thermal wear (2-3 sets), heavy woolens (sweaters, fleece jackets), a windproof and waterproof outer jacket, comfortable trekking pants, full-sleeve shirts. Footwear: Sturdy waterproof hiking boots and comfortable slip-ons for evenings. Accessories: Woolen cap/beanie, warm gloves, scarf/muffler, UV-protected sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen, lip balm with SPF. Essentials: Personal toiletries, a basic first-aid kit with any personal medications, a power bank, headlamp/flashlight, reusable water bottle, dry snacks (energy bars, chocolates, dry fruits). Documents: Valid ID proof (Aadhar/Passport/Voter's ID/DL).

While this is a Himachal Pradesh road trip, we strive to balance driving time with sightseeing and relaxation. Some days involve longer drives (e.g., Day 4, Day 9), but these are interspersed with frequent stops for photos, meals, and exploring key attractions like Ki Monastery, Tabo Monastery, and Dhankar Monastery, making the journey itself part of the adventure.

Yes, foreign nationals generally require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit certain areas close to the border, including parts of Kinnaur and Spiti. Our team will guide you through the process and assist with obtaining any necessary permits. Indian citizens do not require an ILP for this route.

Tripplatter's local team is highly experienced in navigating the region's dynamic conditions. In case of unforeseen road closures (e.g., due to landslides, heavy snowfall on Kunzum La) or adverse weather, the itinerary may be adjusted to ensure your safety and comfort. Our priority is always to provide the safest and best possible alternative routes or activities. We are well-equipped to handle such situations.
