Spiti Valley, aptly named "The Middle Land" – a captivating bridge between India and Tibet – offers an adventure unlike any other. Our expedition is expertly planned to guide you through both the majestic entry and exit routes of this incredible region, promising a truly comprehensive exploration.

Your journey with Tripplatter commences in Shimla, the charming capital of Himachal Pradesh. From here, we venture into the verdant meadows of Sangla Valley, where your first night will be spent lulled by the soothing sounds of the Baspa River. Day two takes us along the riverbank to Chitkul, the last inhabited village before the Indo-Tibet border. Here, immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring valley views and let your worries dissipate amidst the tranquil meadows. As the sun begins to set, we ascend to the majestic village of Kalpa, offering unparalleled views of the grand Kinner Kailash range.

Day three marks your thrilling entry into the magnificent desert landscape of Spiti! But first, a brief yet essential stop at Nako, a captivating lake village where Hinduism and Buddhism harmoniously coexist – a rare and unmissable sight on every wall. After a quick 'pradakshina' (circumambulation) of the lake, we journey to Tabo, home to Spiti's most ancient monastery, a testament to over 1000 years of spiritual heritage.

From this point, you are truly on an adventure of a lifetime. At 12,500 feet above sea level, Spiti Valley reveals a completely different facet of the Himalayas. With Tripplatter, you can relax and be assured of your safety and comfort, guided by our experienced local team. From exploring the pristine beauty of Pin Valley at Mudh to losing yourself in the spellbinding night skies and marveling at the wondrous architecture of Ki Monastery, every moment is designed for discovery. Conclude your tour on an unparalleled high, literally, as you spend a night under a blanket of a million stars, gazing at the Milky Way from your camp around the stunning Chandratal Lake.

Your extraordinary journey concludes in Manali, the haven of Himachal. We aim to have you back by 6 PM, allowing you the flexibility to either extend your stay or conveniently connect to New Delhi or Chandigarh via bus or cab.

Itinerary

Our epic Himalayan road trip begins today with a scenic drive to Sangla. Witness the Baspa river gracefully intertwining with forested slopes, creating a truly exquisite 95-kilometer panorama of the Sangla Valley. Known for its rich agriculture, Sangla boasts an abundance of apple, pear, walnut, apricot, and potato cultivations.

After a delightful breakfast bathed in the morning sun, we journey towards Chitkul, one of the valley's most picturesque settlements and the final inhabited village before the India-China border. This short drive from Sangla to Chitkul offers countless photographic opportunities. Explore the Bapsa riverbanks and pay homage at the Mathi Goddess temple. From Chitkul, we ascend to Kalpa. Local lore suggests Kalpa was Lord Shiva's winter abode, and with its enthralling views of the Kinner-Kailash and Jorkandan peaks, it's easy to see why. Overnight at a comfortable hotel in Kalpa.

Today, we navigate the legendary Hindustan-Tibet Highway (NH 22), famously dubbed one of the "most treacherous roads in the world" by Lonely Planet – a true visual spectacle! Rest assured, our highly skilled and experienced local drivers ensure your safety throughout. Observe the dramatic transformation of the mountains, from Kinnaur's lush greens to Spiti's myriad brown hues. After a quick stop in Puh, we proceed to Nako, Kinnaur's last hamlet before entering Spiti Valley. Following lunch in Nako, we pass through Sumdo, Spiti's first village on this route, en route to Tabo, home to the region's most ancient monastery. Later, a short evening drive takes us to Kaza. Overnight at a hotel in Tabo.

Our fourth day delves into the charming and secluded villages of Pin Valley. Imagine a national park teeming with diverse flora and fauna, including rare plant varieties, a gushing river (when not frozen), and thrilling trekking opportunities. Pin Valley delivers all this and more. We begin with a visit to Kungri Monastery, then journey to the beautiful hamlet of Mudh – the last motorable village in Pin Valley. Established as a national park in 1987, Pin Valley, with altitudes ranging from 11,000 to 20,000 feet, is a sanctuary for at least 12 endangered snow leopards, Siberian ibex, bharal, and various bird species. On our return, we pause at the architectural marvel of Dhankar Monastery. For seasoned hikers, an optional trek to the lake above the monastery awaits, while others can enjoy the sunset from a nearby cafe. We arrive in Kaza by late evening, ready to experience the vibrancy of its cafes.

Today, we ascend to some of the world's highest inhabited regions. Komik, Asia's highest village (4513 meters), meaning 'eye of a snow cock,' is a farming village of 84 isolated souls, cut off for much of the year. This hamlet transports you far from familiar settings to soft brown pastures and snow-white peaks. Observe Tibetan wolves, blue sheep, and various bird species. Next, we visit Hikkim, home to the world's highest post office. You might even meet the postmaster and hear his fascinating stories! After sending a postcard, we drive to Langza (4400 meters), a village of the Sakyapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Explore the ancient Lang (Temple), estimated to be 1000 years old. At Langza, delve into the prehistoric era when Spiti was submerged by the Tethys Sea, uncovering a land rich with marine fossils. We return to Kaza for lunch, then visit the world-renowned Ki Monastery. We'll pause at the base for the ultimate photo opportunity of this remarkable 11th-century structure. This Gelugpa sect monastery, at 13,668 feet, is a prominent learning center and refuge, offering profound peace and calm. We return to Kaza for the night.

oday's journey takes us to one of Spiti Valley's most photogenic locations – Chandratal Lake. We first ascend to the picturesque village of Kibber (4205 meters), an 18 km drive from Kaza. Formerly the highest permanently inhabited village, Kibber is a popular base for treks into high-altitude mountains, offering stunning landscapes for nature lovers and photographers. From Kibber, we proceed to Asia's highest bridge, the breathtaking Chicham Bridge. Onward to Losar for lunch, and then through the high-altitude Kunzum La pass. Stop at the stupa to pay tribute to "Kunzum Mata," the local goddess. At 15,000 feet, Kunzum Pass connects Kullu and Lahaul to Spiti Valley. Finally, we reach Chandratal Lake – a visual marvel. This stunning blue lake, at 4,300 meters, is a must-see, especially on a full moon night. Its crescent shape gives it its name, "Chandra" (Moon) and "Taal" (Lake). Witness the lake transform from crystal clear blues to emerald greens at dusk. Bordered by green meadows and the pristine Chandra Bhaga mountain range, it's an ideal camping ground. Experience the dream of comfortable Himalayan camping as you spend your evening gazing at the Milky Way and millions of stars. Our Chandratal camps provide tents, high-altitude sleeping bags/ blankets, and comfortable mattresses. Please Note: Due to limited camping options at Chandratal, flexibility with an overnight stay in Losar, the nearest village, may be required. In such cases, we will visit the lake the following day on our way to Manali.

On the final day of your Spiti Valley expedition, we drive from Chandratal Lake towards Manali. A quick stop at Batal for a cup of tea at a charming local tea shop awaits. From there, we continue on the Kaza-Manali highway, pausing for lunch at Chatru. Our journey concludes with a drive through the famous Atal Tunnel, bringing your breathtaking Spiti Valley sojourn to an end in Manali. Here, we bid a fond farewell to our driver and guide, who have been your companions and friends throughout this unforgettable seven-day adventure.

Faq

The ideal time for this expedition is from May to October. During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, roads are open (including high mountain passes like Kunzum La), and the landscape is at its most accessible and vibrant. Winters (November to April) are extremely harsh with heavy snowfall and road closures.

Yes, Spiti Valley is generally considered a very safe destination for tourists. The locals are warm, hospitable, and the region has a peaceful environment. Tripplatter prioritizes your safety with experienced drivers, well-planned itineraries, and adherence to local guidelines. However, like any mountainous region, road conditions can be unpredictable, especially during monsoons (July-August), which we monitor closely.

Spiti Valley is at a high altitude, and Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a possibility. Our itinerary is designed to allow for gradual acclimatization by starting from Shimla and having night halts at lower altitudes initially. To minimize risk: Hydrate frequently: Drink plenty of water (3-4 liters daily). Avoid alcohol and smoking: These can worsen AMS symptoms. Eat light meals: Opt for easily digestible, carbohydrate-rich foods. Rest: Don't overexert yourself, especially on the first few days. Communicate symptoms: Inform your tour leader immediately if you experience headache, nausea, dizziness, or fatigue. Consult your doctor: Consider discussing Diamox (acetazolamide) with your physician before the trip. Our team carries basic first-aid and oxygen backup for emergencies.

You will be staying in comfortable hotels and guesthouses throughout the trip. At Chandratal Lake/Losar, we provide well-equipped camps with high-altitude sleeping bags/blankets and comfortable mattresses for an authentic experience under the stars. In case of limited camping options at Chandratal, the overnight stay will be in Losar, with a visit to the lake the next day.

Layering is key for Spiti! We recommend: Clothing: Thermal wear (2-3 sets), heavy woolens (sweaters, fleece jackets), a windproof and waterproof outer jacket, comfortable trekking pants, full-sleeve shirts. Footwear: Sturdy waterproof hiking boots and comfortable slip-ons for evenings. Accessories: Woolen cap/beanie, warm gloves, scarf/muffler, UV-protected sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen, lip balm with SPF. Essentials: Personal toiletries, basic first-aid kit with any personal medications, power bank, headlamp/flashlight, reusable water bottle, dry snacks (energy bars, chocolates, dry fruits). Documents: Valid ID proof (Aadhar/Passport/Voter's ID/DL).

Mobile network connectivity is limited in many parts of Spiti Valley, especially in remote areas. BSNL/Jio generally have better connectivity than other providers, but even then, it can be intermittent. Internet access is mostly limited to Wi-Fi in some cafes or hotels in Kaza. Embrace this opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature!

Our expeditions are designed for small, exclusive groups of 10-12 people to ensure a personalized and comfortable experience.
